Overview of the labor movement in the second half of March 2019

Strike in Orel

On March 18, 2019, employees engaged in the reconstruction of the Druzhba bridge suspended their work. They refused to take up their duties due to the accumulated wage arrears, reaching a total of 7.5 million rubles.

Workers involved in the repair of facilities arrived in Oryol from Udmurtia, Rostov, Omsk, Tomsk regions and other regions. They reported that they had not been paid for several months.

“It happened that they were delaying wages. But this is the first time. We have been sitting without money for several months, since the end of last year. The owner says that there is no money — the customer does not pay,” the strikers said.

In the Altai Republic, workers organized a strike

In mid-March, the strike of the builders of the ice palace began in the village of Mayma. During the winter, the workers never received full wages. This was the main reason for the strike.

“In our brigade, the situation is worst of all - they work from outside the city, so we are being tricked with money pretty hard. Brigades consisting of local ones are a little easier - they are paid more, but also, in my opinion, not fully, ”explained one of the strikers. According to him, during this period they received only partial payments.

Protest in Altai Territory

On March 25, in the village of Sokolovo of the Zonalny district, where the Itkul Distillery is located, more than 100 workers of the enterprise took part in a rally held in a local park. They opposed the constant wage arrears and future massive cuts. Over 93 employees of "Itkulsky distillery" hung a real threat of dismissal.

The bosses of the company  did not go to speak to the people.

In  Chelyabinsk region, the drivers took to  picketing

On March 18, a protest action was held in Zlatoust. Bus  and tram drivers came to the picket. The main reason for the picket is the low level of earnings. The protesters said that the drivers work overtime without additional payment of 12 hours or more on the schedule for three days in one day. At the same time they combine the work of the conductor, but do not receive money for it. The drivers demand a streamline in the rate of working hours, pay for processing according to the labor code and increase in the amount of earnings. They drew the attention of the authorities of the enterprise to the fact that such conditions badly affect the efficiency, therefore, passengers are endangered.

Protest in Ukraine

On March 19, the railroad workers organized a picket. The action took place in Kiev, at the building of the enterprise "Ukrainian Railways". The workers demanded higher wages, job retention, improved medical care, and the restoration of social and pension guarantees.

More than 500 activists from different regions of Ukraine took part in the protest.

- Our main demand is to urgently increase the wages of railway workers and balance the difference in salaries of managers and workers. Now some managers receive 100–150 times more than ordinary employees. We want justice for our workers, ”said one of the organizers of the picket.

Abroad

In Hungary, workers have achieved a wage increase

On March 21, about 1,700 employees of the tire production plant, which is located in the city of Dunaujvaros (Stalinvaros), went on strike. Thus, they expressed dissatisfaction with the refusal of the owners of the enterprise to negotiate a salary increase of 14 percent for all, regardless of their position and seniority.

On March 22, it became known that the ten-day strike at the plant ended in a partial victory for the staff. The strikers achieved a wage increase of 13.6 percent for all employees. In addition, the authorities promised to review the system of bonus payments in favor of the workers.

New demonstrations of "Yellow vests" in France

More than 40.5 thousand people came out on March 23 to protest against the policies of the president and the government. According to the understated police, in Paris more than 5 thousand demonstrators took part in the actions.

This protest "yellow vests" was the 19th in a row.

During the demonstrations, 233 people were detained, of which 70 people - in Paris. 107 demonstrators fined.



 The march against raising the retirement age took place on the island of New Caledonia

On March 24, over 3,000 residents of an overseas colony of France located in the Pacific Ocean, during a mass demonstration, opposed the government's initiative to raise the retirement age to 62 years. The organizers of the march in the capital of the island, the city of Noumea, became the trade unions and the Union of Exploited Workers.

Currently people in New Caledonia retire at 60 years old.
